Community Climate Action Programme

For community based and inspired action on the climate change and protecting our environment.

We work with communities to inform, inspire and enable people to live more sustainably, alleviate poverty, and improve quality of life. We want to bring about a real impact on climate change and environmental action - at the individual and community level.
Aim and Key Features
Our work focuses on two key elements:

1. Delivering practical workshops, events and outreach activities to help people live more sustainably.
2. Building community sustainability infrastructure to support local groups and projects.

Our approach:

Working in partnerships with communities, local councils and schools to increase our reach and foster coordinated climate and environmental action is at the core of our approach. Our programmes are inclusive, accessible and designed to reach those most in need.

How It Works for Individuals

We offer hands-on support through workshops, demonstrations and other activities covering a range of sustainability topics
  • Cutting energy use and saving on heating costs
  • Reducing food waste
  • Affordable, healthy cooking
  • Reusing and upcycling household items
  • Saving water
Participants gain practical skills to lower bills and reduce environmental impact. We also distribute free energy- and water-saving items to families in fuel poverty.

Our outreach includes pop-up stalls, home visits and community events.

We are developing a programme to train volunteers to become local champions and help embed sustainable practices

Xmas Picture1
Thrifty Christmas
For example our current Thrifty Christmas programme includes three community sessions:
  • Creative festive crafts using recycled materials and a swap shop for affordable gifting
  • Practical home energy-saving hacks
  • Low-cost, no-waste festive cooking and food sharing
How It Works for Communities
We are keen to support all local sustainability initiatives, such as swap shops, repair cafés and grow-your-own schemes.
Moreover, we want to see more local services and opportunities that support and encourage people to live sustainably. We want to see community-led and based environmental sustainability initiatives thriving and an expanded provision and reach.

We are piloting a programme to boost the community sustainability infrastructure - seeking to improve coordination and partnership working, and building capacity. More opportunities, and awareness of them, will result in more people using them, and the more they become part of people’s everyday routines, and part of community life. And more impact on climate change and protection of the environment.

Our goal is to build resilient, empowered communities ready to tackle climate challenges together.

Links to the Eco-Save App
Promoting the new Eco-Save app at our community outreach events will further inspire and enable users to explore more ways of living, sustainably. It will also promote and support community-based sustainability and environmental projects through local information and notifications of forthcoming events and initiatives - improving uptake of services and helping garner more support.
Plans and Ambitions
We would very much like to explore and develop models of how to improve community sustainability infrastructure that would be of benefit to many areas in the country. We would like to work with others to develop these and produce guides and tool kits that support existing and new community-led projects and groups to have a greater impact climate change and environmental sustainability.
How You Can Help
We are always keen to hear from people and organisations that want to support or be involved with helping develop a programme, building models that develop and boost community sustainability infrastructure. Together, we can create lasting change for people and the planet.
