Autumn News

We've been sending out copies of our Autumn Newsletter and you can find a copy below: Somerset Eco Centre: Autumn Newsletter 2021

www.ecocentresw.org

Welcome all, to the autumn round up newsletter. After a glorious Indian summer where the farmers seemed to work day and night to get their crops in, the rain has started with some spectacular downpours. Work is continuing here at the Eco-Centre to secure more funding to help drive projects forward and we are excited to share with you the progress we’ve been making over the summer.

Please can we ask all members and supporters to share our mission, and this newsletter, to friends, family and colleagues; the more people we can reach, the bigger the impact we can have!

Business network

We are excited to launch the new Somerset Eco Business Network, a group for small and medium sized enterprises across Somerset, offering support, workshops and networking/collaboration opportunities to all businesses with an eco or sustainable focus. You can find out more about the network on our website www.ecocentresw.org and look out for us in the local media as well.

Currently we are circulating a business network survey which will help us to establish the best way to maximise the benefits of the network for the eco business community. The link to the survey is here https://surveyking.com/w/Eco-Centre-Business and again, we would love it if you could share to your friends/family/network and across social media (tagging us where possible) so that we can get as many responses as possible.

We are also looking for workshop partners - we are particularly interested in hearing from anyone with connections in law, accounting for small businesses or marketing, but we’re open to suggestions for anything that will help businesses to develop and be more sustainable. If you think you can help then please get in touch with us by email. through the website or Facebook page.

Funding

We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a £2000 grant from Power to Change to help the Eco-Centre with a community share offer – a common way for Community Benefit Societies like ourselves raise funds to get their project off the ground. There’ll be more about this in forthcoming newsletters and on the website.

We have also submitted a grant application to the National Lottery, Together for Our Planet fund, for a pilot project to help communities put together household and community-wide action plans to reduce their carbon footprint. In addition, we are currently crowd funding through the Aviva community programme for the project - it’s called Carbon CAP (Climate Action Plan). We’ve raised over £2000 so far in the last few days which will help with the pilot. Anything we raise over £5000 will help roll out the project to many more communities and enable the Eco-Centre to do much more to tackle climate change and protect the environment, and do it sooner. More information about the project can be found here:

https://www.avivacommunityfund.co.uk/carbon-cap

We would love it if you could support our initiative - Aviva have pledged to match fund every penny donated from their Climate Fund for as long as it lasts - but it is running out fast, so don’t delay please support us today, every bit helps! Even if you are not in a position to help us financially, please share the project across your network and social media, because the more we can raise, the more we can offer to the communities in Somerset, and beyond.

Instagram and social

We have joined the Insta family - we are at:

www.instagram.com/ecocentresomerset - do come over and like and share our posts - again the more followers we have the more we can demonstrate to funders how vital our initiative is for the county of Somerset.

We are also still active over on Facebook if that is more your thing and we have a vibrant Facebook members page, which is creating a great online community, with discussions and advice from members about everything from electric cars to inspirational autumn reads. This group is only open to paid members of the Eco Centre, so is a great benefit of joining us as a member.

We are also posting regularly on our website - we aim to share a mix of updates about what we are doing, together with information about eco and sustainability issues that affect us all, and some features on local Somerset eco businesses and events, so do check regularly - if you would like to be featured on the website or know of an event you think we would be interested in, please let us know.

AGM

In July we held our first ever AGM. It was well attended (virtually) and lovely to see so many supportive faces. We were able to share more with members about our plans and what we have been doing and really enjoyed hearing the feedback and great ideas from those attending.

Thanks

Over the summer we had to say goodbye to Lizzie, one of the original directors of the Eco Centre. Whilst it is very sad for us that she is no longer a director we are thrilled for her and her family as they embark on new adventures in the Canary Islands and we wish them all well. We would all like to thank Lizzie for all her hard work on the Eco Centre and send her all good wishes for her new adventures.

As a result of Lizzie leaving, we have vacancy on our board for anyone who can spare a few hours a month who is enthusiastic about taking practical action on the climate emergency and protecting the environment. We’re also on the look-out for anyone who can spare a few hours now and again to help with the various tasks of running and promoting the Eco-Centre.. It’s nearly all stuff you can do from home and there’s no obligations.

If you’re interested in supporting the Eco Centre in any way, email us at info@ecocentresw.org or contact us through the social media channels and we can set up a time to have a chat.. The Eco-Centre has no employees as yet so we are reliant on voluntary small core team to get our big plans put into action.

That’s it for this newsletter, please do get in contact if you have any queries or suggestions from us, we are a community-based organisation and we’d love to hear from you, our members and supporters. And don’t forget for just £1 you can be a member for life and simply by doing that you boost our support base and help bring the Eco-Centre in Somerset one step nearer.
